There is something amazingly pleasant about this album. Probably why it has the highest play count in my iTunes library of any album that has come out this year. I realized that I listen to it almost every morning with my coffee… an extraordinary way to greet the day.
Vetiver is a band that i’d been hearing about but never got around to listen to, and, frankly, I’m glad I waited as Tight Knit is by far the best of their catalog. Lead singer and songwriter Andy Cabaic’s soft and pleasant voice is unassuming yet powerful, the production value is through the roof and the songs are well crafted.
Cabaic shares a long time collaboration with Devendra Banhart and co-wrote and co-produced Banhart’s album “Cripple Crow”. But where Banhart goes out to left field in experimentation, Cabaic’s Vetiver reels it in, giving the band access to normal folks, as opposed to the LA canyon-type hipster elite that Banhart cherishes.
Tight Knit, released on Sub Pop records, has propelled this Vetiver, in my mind, to one of the elite “folk” groups along side of Fleet Foxes & Blitzen Trapper, all three Sub Pop artists by the way, which begs the questions, what the fuck are they putting in the coffee up there?
